School Grounds Week

This week as part of our KS2 grounds week we have been having a go at our own water paintings in the style of Claude Monet. This is us working on our designs…

As part of our maths on measurement we went outside to measure the circumference of different trees to help us estimate the age of some of the trees in our school grounds. How old do you think the youngest/oldest tree was that we found to measure?

Transition Morning at Chorlton High

This morning we were invited to Chorlton High to see what a typical day was like. Whilst we were there we had 3 short lessons; athletics, maths and English.

In athletics we practiced the long jump before having a go seeing how far we could jump into the sand pit – how far did you manage to jump?

In maths we had a go at expressing area as algebra. Before we started we had a go at seeing how many squares we could see…how many squares can you find?

In English we looked at all the different ways techniques that could be used to help improve writing. Who can remember the acronym that we used? What techniques/methods can you you spot and where?

River Trip

As part of our Geography trip we visited the River Crowden in the Peak District. We had a great day; seeing where the river started at the source, exploring the river itself by seeing what creatures we could find through river dipping, as well as having time to spot the different features of the river we have learnt about in class and conduct some scientific experiments in the river itself (measuring the speed, width, depth and temperature of the river at different positions). We even managed to have a game of pooh sticks as we passed a bridge!

Have a look at some of our snaps! Can you spot who manged to get the wettest/muddiest feet?!

Halle Orchestra

Filed under: Music — Mrs Dudgeon @ 12:36 pm

Some children across year 5 were invited to a Halle Orchestra workshop at Chorlton High. They started off with a warm up involving clapping and sniffing (yes honestly!) before breaking into different groups of strings, wood wind and percussion. They then made their own Brookband tune making lots of great sounds! Have a look at a few snaps of the work in progress!

Pupil Voice about our learning of WWII

Filed under: History — Mrs Dudgeon @ 3:58 pm

  • Our class assembly was fun and enjoyable
  • DT – making air raid shelter
  • Designing and making toys for ‘make do and mend’. We loved designing our own teddy/other toys and making them by sewing them stuffing it with old pieces of material.
  • Posters – about the blackout, rations and what to do in case of an emergency
  • Going on the trip to visit the Stockport air raid shelters
  • Learning about rationing. What they did different back in WWII.
  • Cooking – kind of enjoyed the tasting/ lots of us really liked tasting the food.
  • Writing the evacuee letters
  • Coding in ICT – trialling and cracking the different codes they used

Even better if…

  • Make more food – more than four dishes!!
  • Even more writing opportunities based on WWII
  • Make paper mache planes
  • Included Hitler in our play!

Packing as Evacuees

Filed under: History — Mrs Dudgeon @ 10:06 pm

The homework this week was to pack bag as if you are going to be evacuated. We had to prioritise items we would need for staying away for a considerable time, obviously mainly clothes. Here are some examples of what N, M & K packed!
